What do Occupational Therapists do?

Occupational therapists work with clients all throughout the life span. Below are some areas that occupational therapists currently work in and also emerging areas of practice.

Children and Youth (Learning)

It’s true – a child does have an occupation. Their main job is to play and learn by exploring the different ways they can interact with the environment around them. When a child has difficulties learning or playing, an Occupational Therapist can help them find ways to succeed. OTs focus on helping children to dress and feed themselves, tie their own shoes, pay attention in school, socialize with peers, and improve their writing and drawing abilities.

Rehabilitation, Disability & Participation (Independence)

Independence is a word that Occupational Therapists do not take lightly. A person’s level of independence gives meaning to their everyday lives. Individuals set goals for themselves and focus their actions on achieving those goals. Following an injury or disability, an individual’s independence may be affected and they may have to rely on others. OTs evaluate an individual’s level of functioning and guide them to achieving their highest level of independence.

Mental Health (Collaboration)

You’re not alone with Occupational Therapy. Mental illness may have an affect on a person’s social, psychological, and physical health and well-being. An OT collaborates with an individual to help them develop effective strategies to successfully function with their mental illness. Groups such as stress management, coping skills, goal planning, conflict resolution, job skills, and financial planning are offered.

Work & Industry (Doing)

When people think of the word "occupation", they usually think of "work". Occupational therapists understand that work and the ability to return to the work force means a lot to people. As OTs, we are able to help clients with work rehabilitation, ergonomics, and other things related to a person's job.

Health & Wellness (Holistic)

Every day, there is new research being provided about health and wellness issues, from the foods we eat to the activities we engage in. Occupational therapists work with various people throughout all the lifespans. There is no doubt that there is a linkage between a client's health and their ability to participate in activities that mean the most to them. Thus, Occupational Therapy is a profession that is also researching and working on linking health and wellness to their clients' occupations.
